The American government agency aims to evaluate the actual risk of accidents caused by sudden engine stalling while driving, initiating the decisive phase that precedes a potential formal nationwide recall. The investigation directly affects Fiesta, Focus, and EcoSport models manufactured between 2014 and 2021—vehicles widely distributed across both the American automotive market and European mobility fleets.
At the heart of the regulatory authority's investigation is the complex architecture of the wet timing belt system. Premature fraying of the belt's synthetic materials releases micro-particles that clog the internal oil pump pickup screen. The resulting sudden loss of oil pressure causes engine seizure, leaving drivers with minimal room for maneuver to bring the vehicle to a safe stop. Dossiers gathered by the safety agency report 355 instances of sudden failure and show that ninety-eight percent of breakdowns occurred around 70,000 miles (approximately 113,000 kilometers), well ahead of the manufacturer's original maintenance schedules.
Although the Blue Oval attempted to contain the crisis by reducing service intervals to 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometers) and offering reimbursements for repairs already paid for by customers, the response was deemed insufficient.
