Spain safeguards transport at the UN

Puente-Gómez summit in New York

Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente met with Ambassador Héctor Gómez in New York to review sustainable mobility within the United Nations. The Madrid government intends to strengthen its strategic presence within major global regulatory bodies, navigating a delicate historical moment marked by deep geopolitical tensions. This diplomatic mission aims to defend international law and promote shared policies for the ecological transition of passenger and freight flows in foreign markets.

During the summit, Puente reaffirmed the crucial role played by specialized entities such as the International Maritime Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization. Indeed, recent crises in global trade corridors and European skies are severely testing cooperation among countries, threatening the stability of supply chains. To counter these isolationist trends, Spain plans to step up direct coordination between its Permanent Representation to the UN and the sector's governing bodies, positioning its experts at the decision-making tables where tomorrow's rules are shaped.

The diplomatic initiative is part of a broader European plan aimed at decarbonizing commercial flights and long-haul shipping routes. Adopting alternative fuels and developing common operating standards require a binding multilateral commitment from all operators worldwide. By integrating transport governance with emissions directives, Madrid reaffirms the central role of diplomacy in protecting territorial continuity and the economic sustainability of intermodal markets. Constant dialogue between institutions and global agencies remains the cornerstone for building connection networks that are increasingly safe, clean, and resilient to the global challenges of our time.
