Autonomous driving: US opens the door to vehicles without steering wheels or pedals

US federal regulators authorize first robotaxis fleets

On Thursday, July 30, 2026, the U.S. Federal Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officially cleared the way for the commercial use of robotaxis without steering wheels and manual pedals, marking a historic watershed in the intelligent transportation sector. This regulatory breakthrough allows the fully autonomous vehicle operated by Zoox, a subsidiary of the Amazon giant, to complete the transition to paid rides in the cities of Las Vegas and San Francisco after months of free testing. This measure anticipates the future elimination of traditional steering devices, redefining the certification standards conceived in the era of human drivers.

The new vehicles, with their distinctive cubic design, feature four facing seats and no driver's seat, leaving all navigation to advanced sensors and artificial intelligence software. The federal administration emphasized that the removal of mirrors, traditional windshield wipers, and steering represents a logical evolution for vehicles designed to eliminate accidents caused by distraction or drunk driving. The measure, however, sets an initial limit of 2,500 vehicles in circulation over the next two years to continuously monitor the service's performance in the field.

The expansion of self-driving taxis is intensifying the global competition for future mobility, where Amazon intends to challenge Waymo's leadership and Tesla's plans to scale passenger transportation to an urban scale. Despite continued enthusiasm from developers, road safety groups are calling for greater transparency into stop data and operational issues detected in complex traffic. The convergence of flexible regulation and rigorous monitoring is key to transforming these intelligent shuttles into a daily standard for integrated public and private transportation.
