Road safety: the plague of crazy social media stunt driving

Recent accidents in the UK and Ireland reignite the debate on the risks of joyriding

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, a dramatic road safety emergency is causing numerous casualties due to extreme social media challenges behind the wheel. In recent days, several fatal crashes, including a severe accident near Dublin Airport that claimed the lives of five people, have exposed the dangers of reckless stunt driving filmed on smartphones. Teenagers and very young drivers are filming themselves as they speed at dangerous rates, drive with their knees, or head down highways against traffic, turning the public road network into a reckless backdrop to gain followers.

This high-risk driving trend, extensively documented by investigations in the British press, is driving more and more users to systematically violate traffic laws to access virtual high-speed clubs. From motorcycle stunts at nearly two hundred kilometers per hour through traffic to tragic crashes broadcast on live streams, the frantic search for digital approval erases the perception of danger and disrupts road circulation. The phenomenon of modern joyriding demonstrates how highway junctions and traffic corridors are constantly targeted by highly destabilizing criminal behavior.

The destructive impact of these actions on mobility and commuters' lives has prompted law enforcement and media regulators to urge strict action against web platforms. To protect the regularity of traffic flows and the safety of travelers, it is essential to pair police patrols and speed monitoring tools with strict moderation of video content that encourages such behavior. Only an integrated plan combining traffic enforcement and digital platform accountability will stop this trail of blood on public roads and ensure safe transport for everyone.
