US destroys five Iranian oil tankers

Centcom attack follows Tehran missiles, crude oil rises

On September 8, 2026, military forces from the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) sank five Iranian oil tankers between the Gulf of Oman and waters near Kharg Island. The strike came as a direct response to repeated ballistic missile attacks launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against U.S. Navy vessels. The retaliatory operation, which took place immediately after the interception of Tehran's missiles, dealt a heavy blow to the maritime network funding the IRGC, escalating tensions in the strategic naval choke point of the Strait of Hormuz. The sudden military escalation in the Middle East caused immediate and severe impacts on the security of energy transport and the overall stability of major international shipping routes.

Recent stern statements from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirm an unyielding stance against attacks on American ships, signaling further targeted raids against Iran's merchant fleet. At the same time, the crisis expanded on land with the launch of ballistic missiles and cluster munitions toward U.S. military bases in Jordan, nearly all of which were intercepted by local air defense systems. The clashes across the Middle Eastern theater are disrupting the flow of oil tanker traffic, forcing global shipowners to urgently reroute large vessels and step up protective measures for their crews.

Wartime instability along maritime supply corridors triggered an immediate and sharp reaction on international commodity markets, pushing Brent crude prices extremely close to the critical threshold of one hundred dollars per barrel. The direct threat to energy infrastructure and the continuous transit of hydrocarbon cargoes highlights the extreme vulnerability of maritime logistics in the face of major geopolitical conflicts. Prolonged hostilities in the Middle East risk significantly driving up transport costs across the global mobility sector, setting off a dangerous period of uncertainty and price spikes for the transoceanic shipping industry.
