The Yemeni Crisis Threatens Oil Routes

Attacks on Energy Infrastructure Disrupt Maritime Flows

Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi has announced the launch of military operation "Dawn of Yemen" to reclaim territories held by Houthi insurgents. The offensive, backed by over one hundred airstrikes from the Saudi-led coalition, has focused its actions along the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Taiz region. Government forces have retaken control of the Dhubab airfield to secure the shipping lane, while insurgent militias responded by firing ballistic missiles at Saudi Aramco facilities. The strikes forced a shutdown of the East-West pipeline in Khurais, while the UKMTO maritime security agency reported multiple explosions near a tanker off the port of Mokha.

This military escalation poses a direct threat to the stabilization of maritime corridors and global energy supply security. The forced closure of Saudi oil infrastructure, coupled with transit restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, is compelling shipping companies and logistics giants to reroute cargo vessels around the Cape of Good Hope. This reorganization of trade flows is driving a sharp rise in transit times and insurance freight rates, severely impacting Europe-Asia supply chains.

The instability across the Middle Eastern theater highlights the vulnerability of major maritime chokepoints in international naval shipping. Disruptions to Red Sea trade routes undermine the steady delivery of raw materials, prompting international authorities to step up military patrols to safeguard commercial traffic. Restoring security along these maritime corridors remains the critical condition to prevent a renewed surge in energy prices and preserve the continuity of global seaborne trade.
