Hormuz, turning point for maritime traffic: Trump announces new routes

United States, Iran and Oman close to an agreement

In recent hours, during an official visit to California, US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Tehran to promptly unblock maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The primary objective is to restore the safety of one of the world's most crucial logistical hubs for global hydrocarbon transport, severely compromised by the recent conflicts that erupted in late February. The United States, Iran, and Oman are currently ironing out the details of a delicate interim agreement that would allow merchant ships to resume safe navigation, averting further trade disruptions.

The agreement on the table, which could be formalized soon, is initially valid for sixty days and aims to completely reorganize shipping flows in the area. To ensure the safety of oil tankers and protect international supply chains, a new, toll-free, segregated lane system would be established: traffic entering the Persian Gulf would use a northern route, while outgoing vessels would transit south, safely navigating within Omani territorial waters. This complex reorganization of trade routes represents a vital step for the stability of the energy transport sector, which has been severely impacted by repeated armed attacks on fleets in recent months.

Alongside the restoration of intercontinental routes, the US administration is stepping up domestic infrastructure. From California, where the tense security situation culminated with the arrest of an armed individual near a presidential golf club, Trump harshly attacked current environmental restrictions. According to the leader, the misuse of climate regulations has hindered the development of new transportation networks and fuel extraction, sectors essential to fueling national mobility. The proposed strategy aims to deregulate the sector, encouraging infrastructure expansion and logistical continuity from the Middle East to the Americas.
